Apple Allows Retro Game Console â¤Emulators on App Store, with a Catch
In aâ significant move, Apple has revisedâ its App Store guidelines, permitting the global⤠distribution of emulators for classic console games. The updated rules, announced on Friday, come with the stipulation that developers must ensure compliance with copyright regulations and offer in-app purchase options for downloading âŖtitles.
Leveling the Playing Fieldâ with Android
Whileâĸ Android users haveâĸ long enjoyed access to a wide array âof emulators for playing classic games on their devices, Apple’s recent update is expected to encourage developers to bring their emulators to the App âStore. This move could potentially bridge âthe gap between the two platforms in terms of retro gaming options.
Monetization and Compliance
Apple has mandated that emulator apps âĸmust utilize an in-appâĸ purchase mechanism for â¤offering digital items. This requirement aligns with the company’s ongoing efforts to adapt to regulatory pressures and diversifyâĸ its revenue⤠streams. As Apple continues to tweak its App Store rules in responseâ toâŖ regulations, the inclusion of retro games could provide an additional source of income.
Expanding âApp Store âOfferings
In January, Apple released its first setâŖ of rules to comply with the EU’s âDigital âĸMarkets Act (DMA). Along with the announcementâĸ of allowing streaming game stores globally, the company also updated its App Store rules âto supportâĸ in-app purchases for mini-games, AI chatbots, andâ now, HTML5-based mini-apps. This latest update could potentially accommodate services offeredâ by super apps like WeChat.
“Apps may offer certain software that is not embedded in the binary, âspecifically HTML5 mini apps and mini-games, streaming games, chatbots, and plug-ins. Additionally, retroâŖ game console emulatorâŖ apps can offer to download games,” theâ clause said.
Addressing Monopolistic Practices
The⤠U.S. âDepartment ofâ Justice recently sued Apple, â¤citing the suppression of super apps as one of the five points in the lawsuit regarding the company’s âŖalleged monopolistic âpractices. The latest rule updates could be seen as a step towards addressing these âŖconcerns.
Music âĸStreaming Services Benefit
The updated rules also benefit music streaming services like Spotify, âĸallowing them to displayâŖ information about subscriptions and other digital purchases, as well as include links directing users to their âwebsite âto complete transactions. This⤠change comes after Spotify submitted an update to âthe App Store last month to âŖshow pricing information to EU-based users, â¤whichâ had not received approval from Apple for weeks.
Asâĸ Apple continues to adapt its App Store policies in response to regulatory âpressures and market demands, the inclusion âof⤠retro game console emulators and accommodations for music streaming services demonstrate the company’s âefforts to expand its offerings and maintain its position in âthe ever-evolving digital landscape.
